What thoughts do you have after our initial unit, which is a foundation for the class? We have discussed prejudice, discrimination, racism, anti-Semitism, genocide... Were there things you wanted to say in class, but didn't? What are your feelings on having watched "GATTACA"? Can you see the dangers of an "equal" society?

First, I love "futuristic" movies from the nineties and earlier. Now, to get on topic, I would like to point out how strangely contradicting it is that we, as a nation, try to focus on "All men are created EQUAL", but do our very best in avoiding that(communism). Understood, they come from different ends of the spectrum, but its still the same spectrum, in the least. I honestly think Gattaca showed us how destructive equality can be. If ALL men were equal, society would get lazy, i think, and just deplete as a whole. I also think poeple know that they are not entirely equal, which is why we try to succed.
I really like the movie. It seems like what ever one wants or what we will turn into. Everyone wants to be like everyone else. So, in the end I believe we will end up like this movie. If you think about it we are half way there. Only certain people can do certain stuff. Medical problems keeps people from doing things they want to do. Just like in the movie.
I think "Gattaca" was a very good movie. In the attempt to make a society where all men are completely equal, all they achieved was a society with a greater margin between the genetically engineered and the "Godchilds". This is a good lesson that everyone can learn from. A society where all men are completely equal might be good in theory, but when you attempt to put it in to place it doesn't turn out quite like you imagine. You lose individuality and variation among people. Also, if you're born to be perfect and to be able to do anything, you lose your drive and motivation to succeed.
