Maybe it wasn't that they didn't care is was just that they were to afraid to say how they did. I don't know how they could have been so indifferent, especially if it was their friends that were in danger. Perhaps it became every man for himself and they didn't want to not only risk their own life but the lives of their family. But silence is just a deadly as a bullet.
I do see some apathy among fellow students and human beings in general. Sometimes the lack of empathy is frighting. Some people learn to block things that are unpleasant to them, and ignore the problem all together.
