Memorials

Below are the ideas that were presented on the cards I had you all fill out. I have included the names of the people who put them on their cards. HOWEVER, you do NOT have to stick with the event that you listed on your card. That really was sort of a brainstorming thing. I would like for you to read through this post, then leave a comment with your feedback on these ideas, even ideas that you aren't planning to be involved with. Include what project you would like to work on and how you think it should develop.

1.  5K-Caitlin, Megan, Kirklin, Parker, Eli, Erika, Kendra, Adam
I love the idea of a 5K to raise funds. It's a relatively easy fundraiser to pull off and has the potential to raise a lot of money. We would need to decide what organization we were raising funds for, obviously. I want this to be your event, HOWEVER... I love the HonorFlight deal that Jake wanted to do and I think you could do a tremendous 5K to raise funds for it. There are all kinds of ways to approach this 5K for that cause and I think you could do it so big and so well. We can expound on all that if it's something you want to consider.

2.  Carnival type event- Caitlin
This could work well as a fundraiser too, although it's not something I have ever done before and so I'm just not sure how involved it would be as a project. We did talk about maybe doing a craft or art fair or show with it, which might work well. Again, choosing a cause is important. I think all of these working toward the same cause would be awesome but I'm not opposed to the activity fitting the cause, either, which would mean this one would be for another cause....

3.  Living History Event- Megan, Meredith, Hope, Adam
This could be incredible and I think you guys could pull it off very well. I do wonder about the possibility of perhaps connecting the HonorFlight deal to this??? Maybe do a living history focused on LIBERATORS??? Oh man, this could go so far.

4.  Words Matter-- Carolyn, Jocelyne, Kishan
I think you all were saying this in connection to the Stuart activity, which is wonderful. IF it's something that you want to develop as a memorial project, let's talk about those possibilities.

5. Stereotyping Activity-- Hope, Jocelyne
This is something else that I think you were saying in connection to the Stuart activity. However, it IS something that can be developed  as a memorial and we can talk about that.

6. Garden (tree)-- Kaitlyn
A garden is a tough one because you have to work out a plan for it to be maintained. We DID discuss the possibility of just planting a memorial tree of some sort, which I love. A tree is easily maintained and we need to think through the possibilities of what we want to say and how we want to memorialize. IF we went with the liberator theme, we might want the tree to memorialize liberators??? This could also be in some way connected to the art project if it happens....

7. Volunteer Activity-- Abbey
Habitat for Humanity, Refuge Christmas, etc, are all possibilities for this and I think it's a STUPENDOUS idea. I would love for volunteerism to be a natural outcropping of this class as a whole on a personal level for people, but it also works as a memorial. We would probably want a larger group and I wonder if we could find a time or place that connected to whatever thread/theme we pick.

8.  Video-- Jessica, Joseph, Khalia
I think this was mostly focused on the Stuart thing (might be wrong), but this will work for lots of other options as well. In fact, depending on if we pick a common theme or thread or not, it would be cool to do a promotional video on that topic....

9.  Artistic-- Rose, Rachel, Meredith, Kylie, Valeria, Sammie Kate
I always love art but it feels like it's always hard to do something that can be displayed and appreciated. I wonder about something connected to the Memorial Tree, if we do that... Or maybe y'all have another idea... I would love to come up with something artistic, but I am no help in that area.

10. HonorFlight-- Jake
This is absolutely my heart right now. The next flight is the week before fall break, so we COULD go and see them come back home. They need money to fund the flights and I have the amounts listed below, so any fundraising we do could go to this. The absolute coolest would be if one of you (Jake) wanted to apply to be the student escort for the veterans. That would be AWESOME. Watch the videos on this page and see how this all works. Again, I want the projects to be yours, BUT I also want them to be meaningful and preferably connected in some way.
$500 per veteran, videos at the bottom

We could do a superhero 5K because the liberators were heroes to the people in the camps. I would love to do that!

Rose: I like the 5k idea. But I'm not sure how long I could run honestly.

I believe it would be great to see a large amount of money for the Honor Flight. Basing our project around Liberators would be a change up I think. Liberators don't get as much recognition for what they did during WW 2. If we could expand the on this they I believe it could go far. If we could use the theme of Liberators as also for the Living History and the 5K then we could easily get some research done and pull together the resources if we worked as a class. Adam Foster

I like the idea of the 5K for a fundraiser for the Honor Flight.

I love the idea of the 5k and the volunteer project with habitat. I think we would get a lot of public support with the 5k. I would either do the habitat project by myself or with a group of people who are actually passionate about helping.

I really love the idea of the Honor Flight! I think whatever fundraiser we decide to do should go towards that cause. How cool would it be to actually see what the money we raise is going towards? It seems like a lot of people want to do the 5k and I agree, I think we'd have an amazing turn out! Picking out a theme for the 5k would be really interesting and I'm excited to see other people's opinions on that.

I think the 5k would probably raise the most money and the whole class could all work together on planning it out. A lot of people like participating in 5ks and they could really pertain to all ages.

I think that all of these are good ideas, but the ones that I like the most would be the words matter, video and the volunteer activity. I think the words matter would be fun to do with Stuart and same with the video. We could even do those things for the high school and middle. Create a video project about a specific topic and post it or play it on the news, something like that, and with the Volunteer activity I think that is a great idea, doing volunteer work is good for you, and for your community. Can't go wrong. Oh, and the Honorflight would be a really fun experience as well.

I love the idea of Carnival event. I think that's a great idea because it's fun. I feel like a lot more people would want to participate in this.

I like the idea of a carnival event. We can use it as a fundraiser and use the money towards the HonorFlight.

i like the artistic idea either with a group or by myself. Like make a big poster and have like actual diary entries or something like that

We should have a fundraiser to support HonorFlight and an artistic project. I don't think we should only have one big project. Supporting HonorFlight would also allow us to contribute to something more than just local community.

Personally I would love to have an fundraising concert. For the past concerts other students have done(Ana Rocha & Isabel Tellez), I've been inspired to do that and even better.

I think the video would be a great idea, we could get footage of everyone working hard on their projects and make a montage or collection of everything happening to show appreciation and respect for the survivors.

I love the idea of a 5K. I think it would raise the most money out of all of them.

I had originally thought about the art idea when it involved the Stuart students. I still think that could be a good plan, but when looking over these other ideas, I am really interested with the concept of doing a Living History Event. I feel like a living history project would be really enjoyable to everyone involved and also leave an impact on all who interact with it. I think it could be really cool!

I really like the 5k idea and the HonorFlight idea. I think we could get a lot of people to run the 5k. And use the 5k as a fundraiser for the HonorFlight.

The HonorFlight idea seems like a great idea, but it would require full dedication to get to go. Raising money to go through the 5k would be a win-win situation, but it would ALSO require dedication to come out of it successful. The bigger the idea, the more participation needed to ensure its success.

The memorial tree sounds like a good idea, and I think we could connect it to an art project like you said. We could maybe paint some square bricks and put them around where the tree trunk would be. People could even buy one of the squares and personalize it or just put their name/hand print on there.

I love the idea of connecting each project through the Honor Flights. A 5K is a great way to raise funds. Artwork could be incorporated into the 5K or the tree project. For example, glazed tiles could be placed around the base of the tree, or artwork could be set up along the run.

I would like to do the 5K because I feel like it would make enough money for a honor fight. I also like the idea of putting the art and the memorial tree together. We could tie ribbons to the branches. Or we can put stones around the base of the tree and on the stones we can paint why we should never forget the Holocaust.

I had originally thought about the art idea when it came to the Stuart students. When looking at the other ideas on the table, however, I really have an interest in the Living History Event. I feel like creating a living history project that's both informative and interactive would be really amazing for everyone involved. I think it could be really cool!

I would love to be apart of the Living History project, I feel like it would be a great experience not only for the people witnessing it, but for the people involved to learn about the person they are portraying from history. I think it would be cool to either have a day set where people walk around the room and meet people through history and their story to do with the holocaust (kind of like how we watch those survivor videos) or anything else to do with historical figures that was significant. We could also do it where maybe we're just walking through the hallways one day and either wearing a costume or a sign that says ask me about... and tell people about what we've learned or the person we've been assigned. If we can't do that though I would really love to do the stereotyping project, especially in our generation. To do something to show you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover whether it's t-shirts or something that shows we aren't what everyone makes us out to be just because of our religion, race, etc.

I Love the 5k event I think it would be easy to do and fun. I would also want to run in it too. Another project I would love to do is the volunteering project. One idea we could do is set up a stand in downtown Clevegas and just give out food. Such as sandwiches, chips, and some drinks. But anyways if there is more ideas about volunteering then I would love to help out.

I would really like to be involved in the art project. I think it would be a cool idea to incorporate an art exhibit with another group's project. I really like the Honor Flight Idea and think that a 5k could be a great way to raise money for the veterans. I think all of the ideas should be used to help for the Honor Flight because I am sure they would really appreciate it.

I also like the idea of a concert, expanding on Anjali's idea, and I feel like we could get a great artist to come due to Lee universities programs and how many talented people we have in Cleveland. If we could do it I fully support this idea. adam

If we did the 5k, the theme could be American pride since the money will be going to honors flights.

I think doing the 5k would be pretty cool. The idea of having a 5k in honor of the liberators, especially if it is a superhero 5k......!!!!!! It would be a great idea. Maybe even have any liberators and/or survivors of any type of tragedy and have them be the first few to set off. It just sounds lovely. The funds could go to the Honor Flight or to any other organization.

The Honor Flight fundraising idea is great. It would bring me joy to make them happy and feel special as they leave and come back. I think a class trip would be great if we managed to raise enough for at least one veteran.

The idea of doing a carnival would be cool. If enough people liked this idea, every person or a pair could set up their own booth of "fun." If this project set off, I could a food sponsor (parents co-own a restaurant). The carnival would then consist of food and games. I think it would be fun. We could tie in the artistic people in the class... They could do the face painting booth or a mini art class. I have a couple of ideas to tie in with the carnival but it's too much to type or explain. I am horrible with words.
